Bangkok: Sathorn District

A little quieter than Bangkok’s main tourist hotspots, Sathorn (also spelled Sathon) is known for its trendy restaurants and refined hotels. The Skytrain and Chao Phraya riverboat service make it an ideal spot for exploring other parts of the city. But as our itinerary shows, some of the most charming parts of Bangkok can be found right in Sathorn.

WHAT TO SEE

Wat Yannawa

With its vibrant colors and tiered roofs, Wat Yannawa is a beautiful example of Bangkok’s Buddhist temples. Situated beside the Chao Phraya, this iconic temple is known for its quirky “junk ship,” a boat-like shrine that was added more than 160 years ago under King Rama III. Entry is free but donations are encouraged, so consider bringing more than one form of payment.

The Robot Building

You don’t have to be an architecture enthusiast to appreciate the whimsical design of Bangkok’s Robot Building, which has eyes, antennas, and even legs. Sumet Jumsai—one of Thailand’s most revered architects—designed the building after drawing inspiration from his son’s toy robot.

WHAT TO DO

Bangkok CityCity Gallery

Get to know the artistic, edgy side of this ancient city at Bangkok CityCity Gallery. The gallery showcases contemporary art from up-and-coming Thai artists. The modest-sized space is constantly rotating exhibits, which range from sculptures to multimedia installations.

Chan Road

Bangkok is known for its cheap, delicious street food. If this is on your must-do list, head straight for Thanon Chan, aka “Chan Road.” Here, you’ll find a wide range of sumptuous options, such as duck noodle soup and Pa Thong Ko (Thai donuts). Since most traditional street food vendors only accept cash, consider visiting an ATM on the way.
