Venture to the four districts that’ll unlock real London life

As most Londoners typically spend their spare time in the area that they live, the outer districts of the city are a verifiable hub of weekend markets, traditional pubs, quiet parks, and melting pots of global cuisines. For the intrepid tourist looking to adventure outside the shadows of Big Ben and the Gherkin, our list of must-visit neighborhoods can give you a glimpse at how locals do London.

Hackney

Art and innovation collide to forge a creative district that’s chock-full of galleries, tech start-ups, fashion houses, and innovative restaurants. Shoreditch is the obvious starting point, but Dalston, London Fields, and Stoke Newington all offer local charm well outside the typical tourist’s radar.

What to see: The Columbia Road Flower Market is a colorful display of how Hackney residents like to spend their Sundays—strolling about, stopping for coffee, and grabbing a bargain from the antique stalls that dot the cobbled side streets. It gets very busy, so plan to arrive by at least 9:00 a.m. Once you’ve soaked up the atmosphere, head north to Broadway Market for an excellent choice of restaurants, pubs, and cafes for lunch.

Where to eat: Over the past decade, Shoreditch has grown to become a hotbed of culinary talent. The original Dishoom (7 Boundary Street) can be found here—a slick restaurant concept with five locations across the capital that models itself on Bombay cafes run by Parsi immigrants. Expect to stand in line for a table, but it’s worth it to experience the fiery curries, tandoor-cooked meats, and warm, puffed breads. Too hot to handle? Then head to Gloria (54-56 Great Eastern Street) for Italian food and captivating interiors. It’s arrival in 2019 caused a huge stir and is still one of London’s most in-demand reservations. No matter which you choose, both spots epitomize everything that’s great about London’s thriving food scene.

Where to stop for a drink: Forget glitzy venues with smooth jazz and wines from the big names. Hackney’s wine bars are low-key hangouts run by young wine buffs who source exciting and often unheard-of varieties from small producers across the globe. Sound enticing? Then head down to Hackney Road, where you’ll find your choice of candle-lit bars stretching from Shoreditch to Bethnal Green.z

Notting Hill

Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts put this West London hotspot on the map for a whole generation of film watchers. The district comes alive every August bank holiday when the kaleidoscopic floats, deafening sound systems, and endless cans of Red Stripe lager of Carnival takes over. For the rest of the year, it’s all about the weekly antiques market, cozy neighborhood pubs, and an underground party scene.

What to see: From Monday to Saturday, the district’s main draw is half-mile-long Portobello Road Market. Backed by colorful terraced houses and stretches of quirky shops, the market vendors sell everything from glinting antiques and vintage collectables to handmade crafts and crates of vinyl. It's always packed, but Friday is the least busy day, and you’ll be able to explore the fashion-forward Portobello Green Market as well.

Where to have lunch: If the market’s on, it’s likely you’ll be tempted by the wafts of food coming from the vans that park up on the cross sections of Portobello Road. However, if you’d rather plan ahead, book a table at Farmacy (74-76 Westbourne Grove) for some of the tastiest vegan food in the capital. Sourcing most of its ingredients from its farm in Kent, the team creates a seasonal menu that boasts “clean indulgence.” At first glance, the dish descriptions may sound over-indulgent, but everything is free from dairy, refined sugar, chemicals, and additives, all in line with the restaurant’s ethos. Health fads come and go in London, but this restaurant has stood the test of time and trends.

Where to discover its underground art scene: Notting Hill may be one of the prettiest (and poshest) areas of London, but it’s been a hotbed for artists and musicians since the heady days of the 1970s, when punks, mods, Rastas and rockers called the district home. Today, it still has a creative edge, which can be experienced at the excellent Graffik gallery (284 Portobello Road). Entrance is free of charge and you can expect to see boundary-breaking graffiti art from legends like Banksy, Stik and Dotmaster, as well as up-and-coming talent.

Borough Market

Its proximity to the Thames has meant that the charming area under the arches of London Bridge has been an important trading post for centuries, and historians have even suggested the Romans were doing business here from 48 A.D. Today, life centers around food, and lots of it. The market is part of most top chefs’ daily shopping runs, who love the fresh, seasonal ingredients. The restaurants tucked under the railway arches surrounding the cobbled marketplace and nearby Bermondsey high street have become a mecca for hungry Londoners.

What to see: Once you’ve eaten your way around Borough Market, save some space in your appetite and itinerary for Maltby Street Market. This once rarely frequented area transforms into a buzzing food market every Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Highlights include the oozing toasties from The Cheese Truck and inventive dumplings from Gyoza Guys. Be sure to bring cash for both.

Where to take a date: Originally built in 1599, the timber-framed Globe was the epicenter of London’s entertainment district before it was destroyed by a fire in 1613. Fortunately, the iconic theater was restored in 1997. There’s no other theater experience quite like it in the world. Tickets for the “groundling” pit cost the least, but require you to stand for the entire show, which can stretch into the three-hour mark. For something more comfortable (and sheltered from the British weather), secure a spot on the benches in the middle gallery.

Greenwich

Just five miles from central London is the home of Greenwich Mean Time, marked by the Prime Meridian that runs across the courtyard of the Royal Observatory (Blackheath Avenue). But there’s far more to this area than just its geographical importance. With a tree-covered park, slow pace of life, and beautiful rows of Georgian townhouses, it’s an ideal retreat from the hectic city life that’s just a short tube or boat journey away.

What to see: As well as the Observatory, where you can marvel at a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite before popping into a star show at the planetarium, you should carve out time to learn about the area’s naval and maritime history at the National Maritime Museum (Romney Road) and the legendary Cutty Sark.

Where to take a stroll: Greenwich is renowned for its village-like feel, with local life centring around the daily market and many residents heading to the riverbanks when they need to step away from busy London life. Keen ramblers can walk all the way to central London following the Thames Path, which offers ever-changing views of the cityscape and passes icons like Tower Bridge, the Globe theatre, and – eventually – the London Eye.

London has become one of the world’s major food hubs, attracting chefs from every corner of the globe to set up shop and cater to the never-ending stream of tourists lured by the city’s culinary diversity. But it hasn’t always been this way, so let’s take a look at the city’s foodie roots and explore what makes it stand out right now.

The taste of tradition

Before the turn of the millennium, London sat in the shadows of culinary heavy hitters like Paris, Tokyo, and New York, and there was a general perception that British cooking was all about big portions of hearty food designed to get Brits through the cold, dark days, of winter.

But in the kitchens of 1990s London, chefs like Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay, and Marcus Wareing were taking classic British recipes and putting them through a contemporary lens, aided by a pinch of classic French technique. For years now, culinary institutions like Wiltons, The Ivy, Goodman, J. Sheekey, and Petrus by Gordon Ramsay have been flying the flag for solid British cooking. Each has an old-world charm that focuses on what makes the UK's food so appealing. It's seasonal, simple, and stripped-down.

Meanwhile, a wave of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent were bringing authentic cooking to the streets around Whitechapel in the east of the city. Today, it’s a thriving community that attracts a lot of hungry Londoners—most of whom make a beeline for Tayyabs. This cavernous, no-reservations joint specializes in tandoori kebabs, which arrive piled high on top of fluffy flatbreads, along with spicy dahls and authentic curries. It’s a fantastic option for kick-starting a night out on nearby Brick Lane.

London’s must-try dishes

Prepare yourself for some seriously hearty cooking in the capital.

Full English breakfast: “Greasy spoons” abound in London, but it’s worth starting the day with a quality fry-up to see how good it can be. Cecconi’s in Mayfair is only beaten by Riding House Café in Fitzrovia in our opinion, both use the very best ingredients and don’t overdo the portions.

Fish and chips: Despite how much of an English staple it is, only a handful of places really do it properly. It’s all about light, crispy batter and home-cut chips cooked in fresh oil, then doused in salt and vinegar. Every neighborhood will have a decent “chippy,” but nowhere elevates this humble dish like J. Sheekey in Covent Garden.

Pie and mash: Pies have been a staple of the British diet for centuries and come stuffed with classic fillings like steak and kidney, chicken and mushroom, and cheese and potato. Every pub menu will feature a pie or two, topped with a short-crust or puff-pastry lid and served with creamy mashed potato.

The Sunday roast: Chicken? Beef? Lamb? Pork? This is the only decision that should be made on a Sunday in London. Long lunches with plates piled high with roasted meat and veg, accompanied by a few pints, is a very London tradition and we think any of the seven Hawksmoor branches scattered around London do it best.

The taste of the future

An intimate 12-seat table that’s one of the most food-forward supper clubs in the world. A cloud-scraping Chinese hotspot that’s straight out of Hong Kong. A glinting bistro that gives Paris a run for its coq au vin. An experimental kitchen table tucked behind a hotdog joint. A minimalist dining concept that could have been foraged from the woods of Scandinavia. Over the last decade, the capital has become one of the most varied, exciting, and forward-thinking food scenes on the planet.

To keep up with the relentless change of pace in New York, LA, Paris, and Hong Kong, the capital needed a spark, and it came by way of young, inspired chefs like Ollie Dabbous, Jason Atherton, Simon Rogan, Clare Smyth, and Angela Hartnett. Having cut their teeth in the world’s top kitchens and trained under London legends, they left the nest with a pantry full of ideas, skills, and experience that quickly translated into a new-style British cuisine. Suddenly, London diners were tucking into pared-back, contemporary interpretations of the dishes they thought they knew.

It’s thanks to this food revolution that once humdrum areas like Fitzrovia and Mayfair now have streets lined with some of the best restaurants in Europe. Head to Charlotte Street for forward-thinking cooking from the likes of ROKA and LIMA; while Mayfair’s Sexy Fish and Trishna are worth every ounce of hype that swirls around them.

Meanwhile, Soho has undergone is umpteenth revival and almost every block has a snake of hungry diners awaiting their turn to get a taste of the next big thing. Places like Hoppers and BAO are the no-reservation success stories that took East Asian cooking and kicked it into the modern day.

And bubbling underneath all of this is a wave of street food vendors and pop-ups testing their concepts on hungry diners before they find a permanent home and start pushing the boundaries even further. These start-ups soon become the next generation that continue to carry the baton for the melting pot of global flavor, technique, and experimentation that makes London’s food scene so incredibly diverse and utterly delicious.

Brave the elements at Birling Gap

East Sussex

Famous for its row of houses that are slowly crumbling into the sea, Birling Gap in East Sussex offers dramatic views, either from the pebble beach (accessible via a sturdy metal staircase) or the heights of the Seven Sisters, a series of chalk cliffs. Needless to say, keep away from the cliff edge. Not only is it eroding away, but the winds can also be fierce with sudden gusts. The area boasts some stunning coastal walks for all abilities, too, so it’s worth following the meandering Cuckmere Estuary for a gentler option.

Enjoy a more scenic side of Box Hill

Surrey

Famed among cyclists for its steep, challenging ascent, Box Hill is a summit along the North Downs (reaching 224m at its highest point). But for those who prefer a more leisurely day out, it also boasts spectacular views and picnic spots, overlooking the banks of the River Mole below and the Surrey countryside beyond. The western part of the hill is owned by the National Trust, with a visitor center, cafe, and gift shop. The slopes are also home to some 38 different species of butterfly.

Insider tip: The North Downs Way, a scenic hiking trail through the Surrey Hills and Kent Downs Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, passes Box Hill and offers numerous day walks on its 153 mile route between Farnham and Dover.

Trek the Thames Estuary Path

Essex

A 29 mile stretch along the Essex Strait, the Thames Estuary Path snakes through some of the county’s most dramatic landscapes - from a tapestry of mudflats in the south and Tilbury’s industrial docks, to the cockle-shed bays that bid the Thames goodbye in Old Leigh. Positively brimming with biodiversity, a crisscross of bubbling creeks and clay-like marshes dominate this low-lying riverscape. The walking trail can easily be broken up into manageable sections, from 30 minute ambles to half-day stomps.

Insider tip: Show some love for the environment and consider leaving your car at home. Stations along the London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness serve the route.

Follow the cycle trail of kings in New Forest

Hampshire

The name of New Forest is slightly misleading. It dates to the time of William the Conqueror, when land containing 20 hamlets was combined to produce a royal forest, and remains one of the largest areas of unenclosed pasture, heath, and forest in England. With more than 100 miles of dedicated, waymarked cycle routes, the area is best explored by bike which allows you to observe more easily the deer, heathland birds, and more than 1,000 ancient trees.

Trek along the South Downs

Hampshire, West Sussex, and East Sussex

You don’t have to take in the entire 100 mile route of the South Downs Way, which stretches from Winchester in Hampshire at its westernmost tip to Eastbourne in East Sussex. The long-distance footpath and bridleway follows a series of ancient paths and tracks that have been traversed for more than 8,000 years. As well as spectacular views of the southeast and the channel, there are several sites of historical interest along the way, ranging from chalk carvings to a series of pill boxes and other coastal defenses dating from the Second World War.

Insider tip: The South Downs Way includes trails that follow converted railway lines including Centurion Way and the Meon Valley Trail that are suitable for cyclists.

Explore postmodern Margate

Kent

Thanks largely to the Turner Contemporary gallery opening in 2011 (named after former resident, the artist JMW Turner), Margate has enjoyed something of a revival over the past decade. As well as the impressive exhibitions housed there, art fans can also visit the nearby Carl Freedman Gallery for free (spoiler: artist Tracey Emin CBE, RA is also turning her studio into another gallery next door). Meanwhile, the revamped traditional amusement park of Dreamland, with its Grade II-listed wooden rollercoaster, is a must for kids of all ages.

Insider tip: Direct trains run every 10-15 minutes from London St Pancras station throughout the week. For the best value tickets, purchase a day return and try to travel between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM to avoid peak times.

Explore Woods Mill

West Sussex

A mixture of wetland and woodland habitats, Woods Mill forms the headquarters of the Sussex Wildlife Trust and is the ideal place from which to explore a perfectly preserved slice of ancient countryside. Amid its 47 acres, you can discover a range of meadows, wild hedgerows, woods, streams, ponds, and waterways as well as an impressive array of birds, mammals, insect, and amphibian species. Please note that due to the delicate balance of wildlife, dogs are not allowed in Woods Mill.

A shopper’s guide to Mayfair, London

Mayfair’s identity is shaped by its incredible designer boutiques, trendsetting restaurants, expensive jewelers, and high-end art galleries that line its network of streets. In fact, four of London’s most famous thoroughfares border the district with Park Lane to the west, Piccadilly to the south, and the shopping hotspots of Regent and Oxford Street to the east and north respectively. As you may already be starting to notice, Mayfair is a self-contained area that deserves a full day of exploration, so here’s a selection of shopping and dining highlights that’ll help you make the most of it.

Dishoom

A place of calm away from Regent Street, which borders Mayfair, this Irani-inspired café will set you up for a busy day of shopping. Many of the dishes on the long breakfast menu will be familiar – think full English fry ups and Eggs Benedict – but they put a spicey spin on things. Take the ‘akuri’ dish, for example. It is scrambled eggs ramped up with onion, coriander, garlic, and a pinch of turmeric to give it a sun-burst glow, served with a slow-roasted tomato and a buttered bun.

Don’t miss the free refills on the warming chai, into which you can dunk that bun. (22 Kingly Street)

Big name designers on Old Bond Street

When you pry yourself away from the comfort of Dishoom, cross the Regent Street to find Old Bond Street where your arrival in upscale Mayfair will be obvious by the names that line the Georgian-fronted street. As you make your way south from New Bond Street, keep a look out for The Royal Arcade. This richly decorated row of stucco arches, curved glass window bays, and elegant columns is home to fashion and antique boutiques.

Vintage finds at Burlington Arcade

Established by the gentry for the gentry in 1819, this high-end shopping gallery was a precursor to the modern-day mall. Given the luxury boutiques, it has long been a magnet for thieves, and it still has its own police force. Known as the Beadles, you’ll notice them patrolling in their Savile Row-cut uniforms. Don’t expect any trouble, but just be sure not to whistle – this has been banned since the Victorian days when it was a signal used by pickpockets. (51 Piccadilly)

Caffeine fix at Cecconi’s

When you pop out the north end of the arcade, turn right and prepare yourself for a warm welcome at this buzzing all-day Italian restaurant. The coffee is strong and comes courtesy of north London roasters Terrone & Co., and there is always a fantastic selection of freshly baked cakes. Call in advance to secure a window table to watch the world go by. (5A Burlington Gardens)

World-class tailoring on Savile Row

The world’s most bespoke street has been shaping the way men dress for years and many of the tailors that line the street have been fitting and shaping suits here for more than two centuries. There are also fashion houses pushing things into the modern day without compromising English heritage and artisanal spirit.

Lunch at Hakkasan Mayfair

It’ll take a while to adjust to the dim lighting as you descend into the subterranean dining room, which sets the tone for one of the most popular and intimate restaurants in London. Chinese dishes are contemporary takes on traditional recipes, with whole Peking duck, baked abalone and chicken puffs, and scallop dumplings all stealing the show. (17 Bruton Street)

Afternoon tea at The Ritz

Except for cricket, talking about the weather, and queueing politely, there are few things more typically British than the cucumber sandwiches, Earl Grey tea, and warm scones of afternoon tea. The spectacular Palm Court at the world-famous Ritz is a fittingly opulent spot to partake in tradition and we love the choice of 18 teas, live pianist, and towering selection of fresh-baked cakes, roulades, and tartlets. Take in some art at the Royal Academy of Arts

If your legs can take it after an afternoon of shopping, we recommend heading back to Piccadilly to visit the hallowed galleries of one of London’s most well-respected artistic institutions. Britain's first art school has been a hotbed of talent for more than 250 years, and it welcomes exhibitions from greats like David Hockney, Tracey Emin, Edvard Munch, and Michael Armitage. Dinner at Sexy Fish

Dubious name aside, the confident Asian-fusion cooking and unbridled decadence of this Berkeley Square hotspot means the reservation book is full every night. Make sure you book at least two weeks in advance, and once seated, you should order the Wagyu gyoza, caramelized black cod, and one of the smoky, chipotle-infused Golden Riviera cocktails. Stay the night at Claridge’s

If you’re going to make a night of it, the famed art deco of Claridge’s hotel is a wise choice. Its grand foyer and sweeping staircase make a memorable first impression, and the guest rooms and suites are among the largest in London, individually designed in shades of white, gold, pastel blue, and silver. Every evening should begin with cocktails in the candlelit The Fumoir bar, and to work off the indulgence, the state-of-the-art health and fitness center opens early and has personal trainers and sweeping views of Hyde Park. Compare the must-see sights with the off-the-beaten path alternatives

With more than 170 museums, 250 art galleries and a skyline spiked by countless iconic buildings, monuments, and mind-blowing feats of engineering, a first-time trip to London can be as daunting as it is exhilarating. If it’s your first time in the city, we’ve highlighted the experiences that need to be on every itinerary. But if you already know the city well and want to stray beyond the obvious, we have some options for you too.

Soak up art and culture on the South Bank

For most Londoners, it’s hard to remember the city skyline without the giant white wheel of the London Eye sitting at the edge of the Thames. With 32 pods representing the number of London boroughs, the 30-minute experience is a brilliant way to get your bearings from up high, as views from the top stretch to the city’s outer limits and beyond. Catch a gig at O2 Academy Brixton, Southbank Centre, and the Royal Albert Hall

Every night of the week you can catch live performances that cover more genres than you likely even knew existed. Since the 1960s, the city has given rise to countless generation-defining bands and continues to welcome tours from chart-topping pop stars and long-established legends. O2 Academy Brixton has a sound system that’s perfect for its rock-filled program, the Southbank Centre has one of the most varied line-ups in the city, and the Royal Albert Hall is all about acoustics built for rousing orchestral evenings.

Enter the center of power at Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament

Quite possibly the finest example of ecclesiastical architecture in Europe, this is where the majority of British coronations have taken place since construction was completed in the early 16th century. Most recently, footage from the ornate aisle was beamed around the globe for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding. The Abbey is open every day, but if you’re visiting midweek then be sure to tour the semi-secret 900-year-old cultivated garden which is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons.

It's also steps from the Houses of Parliament, as well as Big Ben. We recommend crossing over Westminster Bridge to take in the full span of the UK’s seat of power from the South Bank. A guided tour can that runs Monday to Friday can be easily booked online.

Get outdoors at Kew Gardens and Richmond Park

Believe it or not, London is one of the greenest cities in Europe and west London’s Kew Gardens and Richmond Park play a big part in that honor. The lakes, greenhouses, manicured gardens, and Victorian pavilions of Kew are the opposite of the wild, rambling stretches of forest and meadow in Richmond Park, but both are peaceful places to unwind. Just keep your eyes peeled for the curious deer or two.

Take to the water with a Thames tour

The Thames has been used throughout the years as an economic resource, an aquatic highway, a fresh water source, and more recently, a fantastic way for visitors to see the city. Many of the capital’s most impressive buildings line its banks, and a river tour is a great way to get a different perspective away from the congested streets and tourist crowds.

If you want to see the city from the water, you can book any number of high-speed RIB tours, watch the sun drop from a window table on a restaurant barge, or join commuters on the ferries that link Greenwich with Richmond.

Wake up early for food thrills at Billingsgate, Smithfield, and Borough markets

These three markets have been feeding the capital for decades and offer an incredible glimpse into the city’s culinary heritage. Billingsgate is all about fresh fish and strong coffee, as you’ll need to be there from 4 a.m. to see it in action. The same applies to Smithfield, where wholesale meat traders are already sipping their post-work pints by 7 a.m. Both are ideal distractions if you’re wide awake with jet lag. Borough Market has more traditional operating hours and showcases the finest produce from Britain and beyond.

Soak up history on Kensington’s Exhibition Road

The Natural History Museum offers visitors a series of exhibitions that cover every aspect of life on Earth—from dinosaurs to dodos. Besides the incredible blue whale skeleton hanging in the Hintze Hall, highlights include a super rare saber-tooth tiger skeleton as well as the high-tech Darwin Centre. There are free tours each day, but we always recommend the monthly Friday Lates, complete with workshops, talks, and beverages.

In 1851, Prince Albert strove for the “improvement of public taste in design,” and the eclectic V&A continues the philosophy. There are seven floors split into 150 galleries containing ancient Chinese ceramics, Korean bronze, and Japanese swords, as well as cartoons by Raphael, gowns and jewels from the Elizabethan era and much more. Across the road, children can cast themselves into the stratosphere with hundreds of hands-on exhibitions at the Science Museum.

A new perspective from Parliament Hill

For the best views of the city, most people take the high-speed elevator to the top of The Shard. Sure, the panoramas are incredible, but for an alternative outlook, head to Hampstead Heath for one of the highest points in the capital.
